Disc Decompressions

July 21st, 2010

Disc Decompression Traction is used in therapeutic procedures that facilitate healing of biomechanical abnormalites of the musculoskelatal system of the human body. Intervertebral discs are commonly treated for abnormal function due to displacement of the nucleus pulposus, the gelatinous center that acts as a ball-bearing joint and shock absorber. The surrounding annulus fibrosus, rubberband-like layers of fibro-elastic tissue, maintains a grip of the central nucleus pulposus. Spinal disc herniation is treated in a variety of ways, from exercise therapy or manipulation to surgery.

Decompression Traction Equipment has led to a higher success rate of disc healing than previous treatment options. The decompression traction procedure relieves pressure that builds up on the discs and nerves by drawing areas of herniated disc back into place. This is accomplished by creating negative pressure within the disc, referred to as negative intra-discal pressure, creating a vacuum to draw the bulging and herniated disc material back into the disc space and relieve pressure.

This process allows the stretched or torn annulus fibrosus tissue fibers to heal and tighten due to the slack created by the decompression traction therapy.

Many research article points out the positive effects of spinal disc decompression therapy. This type of therapy is valuable for varying degrees of disc compromise. Discs that have full herniations to those that are small protrusions. Many different devices and brands are available for treatment of decompressing the disc, despite what any one practitioner may say all of them do basically the same thing. The only major difference may be the cost of the treatment and if any warmup exercise is done. The warmup is the most vital part of the therapy as it warms up the muscles to prepare them to stretch.

Alternative Medicine Options

In Western culture, alternative medicine is any healing practice “that does not fall within the realm of conventional medicine” It often encompasses with an historical or cultural, rather than a scientific, basis. The American National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) cites examples including naturopathy, chiropractic medicine, herbalism, traditional Chinese medicine, meditation, yoga, biofeedback, hypnosis, homeopathy, acupuncture, and nutritional-based therapies, in addition to a range of other practices. Most people used alternative medicine to treat and/or prevent musculoskeletal conditions or other conditions associated with chronic or recurring pain.

Back Pain..What is it?

July 21st, 2010

Back pain (also known as “dorsalgia“) is pain felt in the back that usually originates from the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the spine.

The pain can often be divided into neck pain, upper back pain, lower back pain or tailbone pain. It may have a sudden onset or can be a chronic pain; it can be constant or intermittent, stay in one place or radiate to other areas. It may be a dull ache, or a sharp or piercing or burning sensation. The pain may be radiate into the arm and hand), in the upper back, or in the low back, (and might radiate into the leg or foot), and may include symptoms other than pain, such as weakness, numbness or tingling.

Back pain is one of humanity’s most frequent complaints. In the U.S., acute low back pain (also called lumbago) is the fifth most common reason for physician visits. About nine out of ten adults experience back pain at some point in their life, and five out of ten working adults have back pain every year.

The spine is a complex interconnecting network of nerves, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments, and all are capable of producing pain. Large nerves that originate in the spine and go to the legs and arms can make pain radiate to the extremities.

Non Narcotic pain alternatives

June 29th, 2010

I have degenerative spine disease. I’m in pain management and have been prescribed large doses of sustained release opiates. I hate the drugs but in reality at 56 years old and with 2 sons 16 and 12 I have to function. The medication does do that. However I have always wanted to eventually either quit taking or reduce dosage.
I saw the True Back info and thought what the heck 70 bucks and it seemed to make sense to me.
I have serious back issues so I am sure people will have different experiences.
I have had mine now for 1 week. It does help. It also helps for a fairly long time after I use it. I always put the high end at the base of my spine as that is where my pain is. It seems to stretch and take some of the pressure off the vertebras down there. I do it for about 15-20 minutes at a time.
I think it helps, and time will tell whether it is something that can really be life changing like the infomercial seems to say. I sort of doubt that it will help to that point but do think it might help me reduce my pain level enough to perhaps reduce dose of narcotic painkiller.
